2024 SAYWHAT QUIZ CHALLENGE & SASI DEBATE INTEPRETER

Student and Youth Working on Reproductive Health Action Team (SAYWHAT) is a membership-based public health social movement organization birthed in 2003 with the express ambition to contribute to the existence of healthy and empowered young people. It draws its membership from tertiary institutions in Zimbabwe and the SADC region. It also organizes and mobilizes students and young people to participate in the promotion of global, regional, and national targets and goals for sustainable development.

SAYWHAT provides platforms for students and youths to showcase their ability to retain education and public health information, discuss, and contribute to the development of solutions of the education and health challenges that they face. Some of the platforms include the annual the Universities Quiz challenge and the Speak and Solve Initiative debate.


The Quiz model is unique in providing several benefits that include testing the students’ education and public health knowledge levels and identifying information gaps to guide the organization in its programming. While the debate model is tailor-made to sharpen student’s and young people’s advocacy skills by focusing on providing policy and programmatic recommendations to emerging health and education challenges.


This year, the competitions are in their 6th and 7th Editions respectively. The previous edition of both the SASI debate and the Universities Quiz Challenge productions has been broadcasted across various tv networks including Hearts and Soul tv (HSTV), Zim papers TV Network (ZTN), 3ktv and mindset channel on Digital Satellite television (DStv). The previous editions are available on the SAYWHAT You Tube platform.


The 2024 competitions will take place at the SAYWHAT Studio of Choice located at 24 Jefferson, Logan Park Hatfield Harare on the 27th and 28th of May (Quiz) and 30th and 31st of May (debate) from 8am – 5pm. The SAYWHAT Quiz Challenge will run under the theme “A Decade of Action: Students Unpacking and Pushing for Global Goals”. While the SASI debate will run under the theme “Opposing views, Same goal: Unleashing innovative solutions for sustainable development”.


OBJECTIVES OF THE 2024 EDITIONS OF QUIZ & DEBATE

  • To analyze students and youth cognitive abilities in retrieving information of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development and its related frameworks.
  • To facilitate transferring of accurate information on national, regional, and international public health frameworks.
  • To foster critical thinking that results in the development of innovative solutions that address emerging health and education challenges being faced by young people at national level.
  • To broadcast students and youth voices on sustainable development through edutainment.

SAYWHAT is therefore seeking a consultant who will facilitate communication between spoken languages during the 2024 Quiz and debate and individuals who use signed languages.


PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

The purpose of this assignment is for the consultant to fully participate in the production of both the 2024 Quiz and debate competitions and play a crucial role in bridging the gap between deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals and those who communicate using spoken language. S/he should be presentable and be able to breakdown communication barriers allowing deaf individuals to engage fully with the quiz and debate proceedings contributing to an inclusive and equitable experience for all audiences.


SCOPE OF ASSIGNMENT

The consultant shall work within a broad spectrum covering the following aspects:

  • To meet physically/virtually with the SAYWHAT Communications and Advocacy team (and any other relevant consultants i.e., quiz/debate masters, producer, adjudicators) at least 1 week before the event to deliberate on the assignment and share relevant information and templates.
  • Research and familiarize with SAYWHAT and its partners, the participants, the quiz/debate manual, quiz questions and the debate motions. Understand context and prepare any specialized vocabulary related to the quiz and debate.
  • Listen carefully during the quiz and debate, paying close attention to every detail to accurately interpret content. Ensure all spoken information is conveyed faithfully including both questions/ motions posed and responses from participants choosing best expressions, precise signs, finger-spelling and facial expressions.
  • Adapt swiftly to changing topics, terminology and participant interactions considering the fast-paced manner of quiz and debate.

REQUIRED EXPERTISE


Skills and Knowledge

  • Certified Sign Language Interpreter who adheres to a professional code of conduct.
  • Mental agility and composure to handle the pressure of real-time interpretation.
  • Proven skill in establishing priorities, working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proven experience as an interpreter for television content with at least two (2) referees and sample content of previous work.
  • Comfortable with using broadcast-related equipment.

REQUIRED SUBMISSIONS

  • Copy of CV with at least two (2) referees.
  • Quotation for the service.
  • Two (2) samples work of similar nature.
  • Cover Letter demonstrating the ability to execute this task and the methodologies to be employed.

MANAGEMENT

  • The Consultant will report to the SAYWHAT Communications and Advocacy Lead.
  • The Consultant will be responsible for their own overheads and logistical requirements such as transport, accommodation, office space, administrative and secretarial support, and telecommunications.
