Transforming the Conversation: World Suicide Prevention Day and People Who Use and Inject Drugs

we come together to mark a pivotal moment in the global fight against suicide. This year, we embrace the theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” inviting open dialogue and empowering individuals to seek help. It’s not just a day of remembrance; it’s a call to action—a chance to reshape how we discuss and address this complex issue.

Suicide is a leading cause of death worldwide, claiming over 800,000 lives each year. In Zimbabwe, the statistics are especially alarming, with a rate of 14.6 suicides per 100,000 people, one of the highest in Africa. Among the most vulnerable in this heartbreakingly high statistic are people who use and inject drugs (PWUID). Stigmatized and often isolated, they face unique challenges: the specter of overdose, the shadows of trauma, and the weight of mental health issues that frequently go unaddressed.

Barriers to accessing support services only deepen this vulnerability. Yet, by being vigilant and recognizing warning signs—such as sudden changes in behavior, withdrawal from social circles, increased substance use, or expressions of hopelessness—we can intervene before it’s too late. Together, we can save lives by acting early.

It’s vital that we break the silence surrounding suicide. Sharing personal stories and experiences fosters a supportive environment where individuals feel safe to seek help. Let’s transform our approach by:

Starting Conversations: Engage in discussions about mental health and suicide without judgment. Your words can be a lifeline.

Educating Ourselves: Equip yourself with knowledge about mental health, suicide prevention strategies, and local resources. Understanding is the first step toward compassion.

Offering Support: Encourage those who are struggling to reach out for help. Your support can make all the difference.

As we commemorate World Suicide Prevention Day, let’s shine a light on the challenges faced by PWUIDs. By reducing stigma and promoting access to essential services, we can work towards lowering the suicide risk in this vulnerable population.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, don’t hesitate to reach out. Call our toll-free number 577 for support.
