Building on this decade-long evolution, SARSYC VI comes at a critical time when global funding priorities are
shifting and traditional development aid is contracting, creating uncertainty for youth health and education
programs across the region. While Southern Africa risks losing hard-won gains, young people also face
persistent and emerging challenges, from digital health risks and infrastructure gaps to climate-related
vulnerabilities, mental health crises, rising substance abuse, and ongoing issues such as teenage pregnancies
and unsafe abortions. Increasing concerns around gender-based violence, including its growing digital
dimensions and the rising burden of non-communicable diseases among youth further underscore the urgency
for integrated, sustainable solutions. This reality reinforces the need for sustainable, locally driven solutions
complemented by strong partnerships.
