PWUID Project

SAYWHAT is implementing a Global Fund project towards ending HIV as a public health threat by 2030. The project running from 2024 – 2026 targets People Who Use and Inject Drugs (PWUIDs) in Harare and Bulawayo – Zimbabwe.

Primary objective:  To enhance the overall well-being and quality of life for PWUIDs by implementing Comprehensive Prevention Programs that focus on universal access to HIV and TB Prevention, Treatment, Care, and Support Services.

We recognize the prevalence of injecting drug use and therefore, complements government efforts under the Harm Reduction, Treatment and Rehabilitation pillar of Zimbabwe’s Multisectoral Drug and Substance Abuse Plan (2024–2030). This pillar aims to reduce health and social harms associated with drug use, expand healthcare capacity for evidence-based interventions, and enhance treatment accessibility through integrated services.

In line with these objectives and through our Drop-in Center, we focus on key interventions such as the introduction of Needle & Syringe Programmes (NSP) to reduce blood-borne infections and the roll-out of community-based rehabilitation,

including peer-led support. SAYWHAT also partners with Health Care service providers from the City Health Department and refers PWUIDs to access HIV treatment, care and support services. These efforts ensure that people who use and inject drugs receive comprehensive support that promotes health, dignity, and reintegration into society.
